Antiprotons, stored and cooled at low energies in a storage ring or at rest in traps, are unique tools for exploring questions on fundamental interactions between matter and antimatter. Experiments with low energy antiprotons are at the cutting edge of science; they are, however, very difficult to realize and require beyond state-of-the-art accelerators and beam instrumentation. The establishment of a world-wide unique Facility for Low energy Antiproton and Ion Research (FLAIR) at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is the goal of the international FLAIR collaboration. 

Next Generation of Antimatter Research

  • high-brightness high-intensity low-energy antiproton beams
  • cooled beams down to 300 keV in a Low energy Storage Ring (LSR)
  • further deceleration to 20 keV in the electrostatic Ultra-low energy Storage Ring (USR) for atomic collision experiments with internal targets 
  • slow and fast extraction from the LSR and USR
  • decelerated beams via HITRAP for efficient deceleration of antiprotons from 4 MeV to rest and extraction from a cooler trap at keV energies​

FLAIR will provide
